Start Your CPA Journey with Stark & Marsh

Stark & Marsh CPA LLP is a CPAWSB-approved training office. We support both MPAcc and CPAWSB pathways to help you earn your CPA designation.

Students gain hands-on experience by working on client files from start to finish. Each student is supported by a trainer and mentor throughout the process. You’ll work on large, complex files while still enjoying a small-town firm environment.

No matter your path — MPAcc or CPAWSB — we offer:

  • Paid study leave for the Common Final Exam (CFE)

  • Full coverage of student membership, module, and CFE fees

  • A Densmore in-house training week (with paid study time and all costs covered)

OUR COMMITMENT TO CPA STUDENTS
  • Paid study and exam days that does not come out of your holidays or banked time.
  • Mentor assistance in marking and reviewing assignments and exams.
  • Course attendance relating to the modules (workshop sessions) including travel time is paid for.
  • Reimbursement will be provided for mileage (approved rates), meals, rental vehicles (if necessary), and accommodations to attend out of town courses or exams.
  • A paid study day for each module and a paid day to write the module exam—if additional time off is wanted, it can be requested.
  • Paid time to write a practice exam in an exam setting for each module when studying—exam is debriefed by recent graduates, which is then went over with the student.
OUR COMMITMENT TO MPACC STUDENTS
  • A leave of absence is provided to our MPAcc Students for each four month semester.

Commonly Asked Questions

Do I need to plan on becoming a CPA to work for Stark & Marsh?

No. However, we encourage students to consider the pros and cons of each career path. Not attaining your CPA might mean it may take longer to work your way up through the ranks. You could still end up in the same place as CPA’s in our firm but it might not happen as quickly.

Other than taxes what does your firm specialize in?

Stark & Marsh offers accounting, tax, audit, consulting, and financial planning services to farm and business owners in southern Saskatchewan. We specialize in helping farm and business owners navigate through tax complexity, improve profitability, manage cash flow, establish business value, prepare for transition, and ensure your personal financial situation is effectively planned and managed.

What is your annual hour requirement for a full time employee?

Our accounting firm operates on a full time 2100-hour annual work commitment, and we also offer part time or even seasonal positions.

Other than Swift Current, do you have any other locations?

We have full time offices in Shaunavon, Assiniboia, and Cabri, SK. We also have day offices in Kyle, Leader, and Maple Creek.

How many people work at Stark & Marsh?

We have roughly 90 staff members throughout our locations.

What types of skills are valuable that I might not be aware of?

Strong time management skills, good communication skills (written & oral), and strong problem-solving skills are the top three qualifications we seek in all candidates.

Understanding numbers is only a small portion of being a good accountant; being able to think outside the box and understand the bigger picture is more important.

Conrad Funk CPA, CA, CVA, Partner

In 2012, Conrad enrolled in the CASB program while working at Stark & Marsh, and obtained his CA designation in 2015. At the same time, he also helped lead the Swift Current Indians to a WMBL championship. Stark & Marsh offers a strong approach to a flex-time environment, which allowed Conrad to put more work time in when the ball season was less active.

Laurie Berg ACIA, Senior Manager

Laurie started at Stark & Marsh in 1992 as a seasonal file clerk, but has since worked her way up the corporate ladder and today holds a management position. In 2002, she received her ACIA designation through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC. She is a valuable team member, serving on several of our firm’s advancement teams and works on promoting our business.

Nadine Dyck CPA, CA, CVA, CBV, Partner

Being able to balance work life and home life is important to Nadine. It is also important to us at Stark & Marsh.

Nadine is both a mother and valued member of our team, and the firm has supported her need to work reduced hours. She also continues to advance her career by enrolling in programs, such as the Emerging Leaders Program, to improve and develop skills that will help her and our firm succeed.

Armed with a passion for agriculture, Shane began working with us in 2002, when he moved back to Swift Current to be more involved in the family farm. CONTROLLER

Stark & Marsh CPA LLP (Swift Current) is seeking a Controller. This position plays a key leadership role within the firm by providing financial stewardship, operational insight, and strategic guidance to the Finance Committee. Our Controller is responsible for overseeing the firm’s internal finance function while supporting strategic decision-making, performance management, budgeting, and operational excellence across the organization. The Controller works closely with the CEO and Operations Management to ensure the firm maintains strong financial health, scalable processes, effective internal controls, and data-driven decision-making aligned with the firm’s strategic objectives.

 Key Leadership Responsibilities

 Executive & Strategic Leadership

  • Collaborate with the CEO and leadership teams to support organizational growth, operational performance, and strategic planning.
  • Provide financial insight and recommendations to the CEO and Finance Committee.
  • Support leadership succession planning and organizational transition initiatives.

 Financial Leadership & Oversight

  • Lead the firm’s internal financial operations, planning, forecasting, and financial strategy.

Qualifications & Experience

 Required Qualifications

  • Progressive senior leadership experience in accounting and/or finance roles
  • CPA designation Considered and asset.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline preferred. However, an equivalent combination of relevant education, professional certifications, and progressive accounting or finance experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong understanding of financial management, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.

 Preferred Experience

RECORD KEEPER

Stark & Marsh CPA LLP (Shaunavon) is seeking a Record Keeper to join our growing department. This is a full time permeant position. 

The Candidate:

Our successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring everyday financial transactions for corporate and personal clients. They will also prepare personal tax returns and deliver software generated financial statements to clients. The ideal candidate will have bookkeeping experience, however on the job training will also be provided.  

Job duties include:

  • Account transaction entry into a ledger or computer software
  • Some account analysis
  • Account reconciliation
  • GST calculation and remittance
  • Payroll account maintenance (issue payroll checks, deduction calculations, remittances)
  • Corporate Tax account remittance
  • Some analysis of financial statements
  • Preparation of file for year-end completion
  • Contact clients for records to be brought in and follow up for any missing information
  • Entering trial balance into Accountant Software for yearend completion
  • Preparation of personal tax returns which requires a commitment to longer hours through tax season

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in at least two of the following software programs:  QuickBooks, Sage 50, AgExpert, and Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn the others as they are applicable to this position.
  • Knowledge of Caseware, Taxprep and Profile programs an asset
  • Excellent mathematical skills
  • The ability to function with minimal supervision

AUDIT MANAGER

Stark & Marsh CPA LLP (Swift Current) is seeking a qualified individual to join our Audit & Review Department as a full-time permanent Audit Manager.  As part of our assurance team, our successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of reviews and audits. This role has the option to be onsite, remote, or hybrid.

 

Requirements

Our successful candidate will take on a professional role as part of servicing our clients, leading engagement teams, and providing coaching and mentoring to junior team members.  The ideal candidate requirements are:

  • CPA designated or equivalent designation, or near completion of the designation.
  • Strong understanding of the CPA Canada Handbook including financial reporting frameworks and Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS) Canadian GAAP and GAAS.
  • Working knowledge of accounting and financial statements; and the ability to plan and execute an engagement to gain assurance over the same.
  • Strong computer literacy.
  • Experience with public accounting software such as CaseWare, Audit Dashboard, CCH iFirm, Excel and Practice Management/Dashboard. Experience in TaxPrep, recordkeeping software such as QuickBooks and Sage 50 is considered an asset.

High School Scholarship Opportunities

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting youth and education in our community, Stark & Marsh is proud to offer $500 scholarships annually to graduating students of Swift Current Comprehensive High School, Shaunavon High School, and the Assiniboia Composite High School.

These scholarships are intended to assist students transitioning from high school to post-secondary education. To be eligible, applicants must be graduating from Grade 12 and planning to enroll in a full-time post-secondary program within one year of graduation.

Scholarship Selection Criteria:

  • Submission of academic records from Grades 10, 11, and the first semester of Grade 12

  • Demonstrated involvement in school and community activities

  • Evidence of financial responsibility and planning toward the cost of education

  • Proof of enrollment in a qualifying post-secondary institution is required before scholarship funds are released

  • Scholarship recipients must consent to the public release of their name, and in some cases, a photo for recognition purposes
